Script is an interpreted program that runs on the client computer. It is written in a scripting language. An interpreted language used to write scripts is called scripting language.

HTML is used to exchange information over the internet. It provides little or no control over a webpage once it is displayed in the browser. It is possible to interact with the  user in HTML. Moreover the contents of an HTML document are static. Scripting is a method that can be used to create dynamic HTML pages and provide user interaction. There are several methods that can be used to create dynamic pages:

  • Server-based scripts
  • Client-side scripts

JavaScript

JavaScript is an interpreted language that is used to add dynamic contents in webpages. Interpreted means that the entire web page is downloaded to the browser and JavaScript code is executed when an event is triggered. When the code is executed it is interpreted one line at a time. There are a number of events that will trigger the execution of a JavaScript such as click on a form button or the completion of a webpage loading etc.

JavaScript is used to include messages, scrolling text, animations, menus, pop-up windows etc. JavaScript is directly embedded in HTML.

JavaScript was developed by Sun Microsystems and Netscape Communicator. It is an open language. It can be used without purchasing. Netscape supports JavaScript and internet explorer supports JScript. JScript is a subset of JavaScript.
